From 1731 to 1823, British sailors were allocated half a pint of rum per day. Prior to that, the ration was a gallon of beer per day. Rum was easier to store and was generally diluted for regular grog breaks. In 1824, the ration was halved due to discipline problems. No kidding.
I think all jobs should be allocated a rum ration – 50ml for doctors, 25ml for surgeons and so on, right up to a pint for teachers and novelists.
